In a garden strewn with shady coconut trees and cascades of
bougainvillea, the Colonial Coconut Hotel is perfect for those
seeking to experience the Mauritius of yesteryear.
The hotel is one of the few remaining examples in the Indian
Ocean of the traditional hotels which were once standard staging
posts on the long passage to the East. The Colonial Coconut has a
unique style and a relaxed atmosphere that charm visitors,
especially artists and writers (Jon Michelet stayed here whilst
writing his bestselling thriller 'Le Coconut'). The setting is
peaceful and yet within easy reach of shops, and all the
entertainment of Grand Baie.
The buildings, some of which date from the 1920's use
traditional designs and materials. The interior deign creates an
elegant but informal ambience by using family furniture and
artworks from the colonial past of Mauritius and the Far East.
Situated at Pointe Malartic, on the Northern Coast of Mauritius,
the hotel is on the west side of Grand Baie and faces the northern
islands. At night the lights along the coast-line merge with the
stars to provide the perfect atmosphere to enjoy the Hotel's famous
cocktail 'piqure de moustique' (mosquito sting!) a powerful mixture
of guava, mango, coconut, rum and gin!
The hotel has just thirty rooms, all equipped with telephone,
bathroom with shower and WC, overhead fan and a private terrace or
balcony.
The restaurant 'La Varangue' borders the swimming pool, and serves
Mauritian, Oriental and French cuisine, and the "best coffee on the
island"! Once a week, the traditional séga is performed for
diners.
You will be entranced by Colonial Coconut's old world charm and
courtesy.
